We sent down the Torah containing guidance and light, and the Prophets who had submitted themselves gave judgement by it for the Jews—as did their scholars [Rabaniyun] and their rabbis [Ahbar]—by what they had been allowed to preserve of Allah's Book to which they were witnesses... (Surat al-Ma'ida, 44)

Then We gave Moses the Book, complete and perfect for himwho does good, elucidating everything, and a guidance and a mercy, so that hopefully they believe in their encounter with their Lord. (Surat al-An'am, 154)

But before it there was the Book of Moses as a model [imam] and a mercy. And this is a corroborating Book in the Arabic tongue so that you may warn those who do wrong, and as good news for the good-doers. (Surat al-Ahqaf, 12)

We sent Moses with Our signs: "Bring your people from the darkness to the light, and remind them of the Days of Allah."There are certainly signs in that for everyone who is steadfast, thankful. (Surah Ibrahim, 5)

He [Allah] said, "Moses, I have chosen you over all mankind for My message and My word. Take what I have given you and be among the thankful." We wrote about everything for him on the Tablets as an admonition and making all things clear. "Seize hold of it vigorously and command your people to adopt the best in it. I will show you the home of the deviators!" (Surat al-A'raf, 144-145)

When Moses's anger abated he picked up the Tablets and in their inscription was guidance and mercy for all of them who feared their Lord. (Surat al-A'raf, 154)

We gave Moses the Book -be in no doubt about the meeting with him- and made it a guidance for the tribe of Israel. (Surat as-Sajda, 23)

Say, "We believe in Allah and what has been sent down to us and what was sent down to Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac and Jacob and the Tribes, and what Moses and Jesus were given, and what all the Prophets were given by their Lord. We do not differentiate between any of them. We are Muslims submitted to Him." (Surat al-Baqara, 136)

He has laid down the same religion for you as He enjoined on Noah: that which We have revealed to you and which We enjoined on Abraham, Moses and Jesus: "Establish the religion and do not make divisions in it."... (Surat al-Shura, 13)

Allah has bought from the believers their selves and their wealth in return for the Garden. They fight in the way of Allah and they kill and are killed. It is a promise binding on Him in the Torah, the Gospel and the Qur'an and who is truer to his contract than Allah? Rejoice then in the bargain you have made. That is the great victory. In the Qur'an, our Almighty Lord promises believers a blessed dominion over the entire world. As part of that promise, those who have faith and do good works will inherit the world, and the moral values of Islam will reign. This means the global preeminence of beauty, fertility, joy, happiness, enlightenment, purity, peace, justice, brotherhood and love. In this time, when true faith in Allah, the One and Only prevails, all superstitious beliefs and philosophies and all irreligious ideologies will disappear from the face of the earth. Almighty Allah will make the Prophet Jesus (pbuh) and Hazrat Mahdi (pbuh) His instruments in this great commission in the End Times.

Hazrat Mahdi (pbuh) is spoken of in hundreds of trustworthy hadiths handed down from our Prophet (saas); the portents of the End Times, Hazrat Mahdi's (pbuh) physical characteristics, his coming and the periods before and after his coming are all described in detail. Since, by Almighty Allah's leave, these accounts all began taking place as of Hijri 1400 (1979/1980 in the Gregorian calendar), it seems that we are now living in the End Times and Hazrat Mahdi (pbuh) has already appeared. It appears from all these signs which have come about in complete agreement with the hadiths that, by our Lord's will, little time remains until the global sovereignty of the moral values of Islam under the leadership of the Prophet Jesus (pbuh) and Hazrat Mahdi (pbuh).

The global ascendency of the values of Islam and the way of the Mahdi are described in detail in the Qur'an:

-     In their commentaries on the Qur'an, great Islamic scholars have analyzed a number of verses referring to Hazrat Mahdi (pbuh) and the community of believers around him.

-     In the Qur'an, Almighty Allah commands Muslims to be united and makes this an obligation for them. Throughout the course of history Muslims have lived under the leadership of the mahdis of their own times, and today they must also live under a single leader, as our Lord commands. In the End Times it is Hazrat Mahdi (pbuh) who will be the spiritual leader of Muslims, who will unite Muslims together as our Lord commands. Therefore,every verse that refers to unity among Muslims refers to the way of the Mahdi.

-     Our Almighty Lord reveals that there is great wisdom in the stories of the prophets in the Qur'an for clear-thinking people. Every prophet is the Mahdi of his own day. Therefore, every story of a prophet contains references to the End Times in which we are living, in other words, to the way of the Mahdi (pbuh). Our Prophet (saas) himself reveals that the stories of the Prophet Solomon (pbuh) and Dhu'l Qarnayn in Surat al-Kahf contain verses that refer to the system of the Mahdi.

-     Throughout the course of history there has been a struggle between the good and evil, between the supporters of satan and the supporters of the truth. In the Qur'an, Almighty Allah describes this great struggle and gives examples of it. Under the law of Allah, a great struggle is also taking place in the End Times between the way of the antichrist (antimessiah) and the way of the Mahdi.Therefore, in every verse of the Qur'an that Allah describes this struggle again refers to the system of the Mahdi.

It is clear that, through many of the verses of the Qur'an, our Lord tells Muslims of the way of the Mahdi and the global preeminence of the moral values of Islam.

The coming of Hazrat Mahdi (pbuh) is the greatest event in the history of the world and is therefore a fact also spoken of in other Holy Books. The Torah and the Psalms [Zabur] contain sections that have remained unaltered over time and are in full agreement with the Qur'an and the hadiths of the Prophet (saas). The verse "We wrote down in the Psalms, after the Reminder came: 'It is My servants who are righteous who will inherit the earth'." (Surat al-Anbiya', 105) says that the coming of Hazrat Mahdi (pbuh) and his global jurisdiction are also spoken of in the Torah and the Psalms. Indeed, when we look at the Torah and the Psalms we see that this is set out in great detail and in complete conformity with verses of the Qur'an and the hadiths. The coming of Hazrat Mahdi (pbuh), under various names, such as "Mashiach", "the King Messiah", "Shiloh (He who is sent, the gift of Allah)" and others, is foretold in various uncorrupted sections, together with his global sovereignty. The periods before and after the appearance of Hazrat Mahdi (pbuh) are also described.

The hadiths of our Prophet (saas) reveal that the coming of Hazrat Mahdi (pbuh) is also described in all the sacred scriptures Allah revealed:

Naim has stated: "I find Hazrat Mahdi (pbuh) thus in the pages of the Prophets (in the scriptures revealed to Adam, Seth, Enoch and Abraham [peace be upon them]): There will be no cruelty and nothing shameful in the actions of Hazrat Mahdi (pbuh)." (Al-Muttaqi al-Hindi, Al-Burhan fi Alamat al-Mahdi Akhir az-Zaman, p. 21.)

The books of the Prophets reveal that, "The work of Hazrat Mahdi (pbuh) is not cruel and evil."(Ibn Hajar al-Haythami, Al-Qawl al-Mukhtasar fi `Alamat al-Mahdi al-Muntadhar, p. 49.)

Ibn al-Munawisays: "Thus it is written in the book of Daniel (pbuh)... Hazrat Mahdi (pbuh) will appear, and Almighty Allah will save those previously subject to persecution and believers. The sunnahs will be revived with him..." (This hadith is to be found in a hand written copy of Al-Muttaqi al-Hindi, Al-Burhan fi Alamat al-Mahdi Akhir az-Zaman in the Suleymaniye Library.)

It can be seen from these hadiths that the way of the Mahdi appears in the Holy Scriptures of all divine faiths and that Muslims will find Hazrat Mahdi (pbuh) when they look in these books.

The coming of Hazrat Mahdi (pbuh) is similarly foretold in those true parts of the Gospel that are compatible with the Qur'an. References such as "Paraclete" and "water pitcher" are noteworthy. These refer to a leader the glad tidings of whose coming in the End Times is given by the Prophet Jesus (pbuh), who will bring peace, security, unity and union to the world, and who is born under the sign of Aquarius (Allah knows the truth). (It is also highly significant that 2012 is regarded as the start of the Age of Aquarius.) The Prophet Jesus (pbuh) advises his disciples to join this trustworthy individual, who will come after him, to heed his words and to follow him to the end.

In addition, the signs of the End Times set out in the Gospel and the descriptions of the period following the coming of the Prophet Jesus (pbuh) and Hazrat Mahdi (pbuh) are also in close agreement with verses of the Qur'an and hadiths handed down from our Prophet (saas). Therefore, all the signs of the End Times according to the Gospel have also come about one after the other. We can safely conclude from all this, on the basis of Islamic references in particular, and also of the Gospel, the Torah and the Psalms, that we are living in the age in which Hazrat Mahdi (pbuh) has started his work.

This small book contains various verses from the Qur'an and passages from the Torah, the Gospel and the Psalms referring to the way of the Mahdi and the global preeminence of the moral values of Islam. In the End Times in which we are living, Allah the Compassionate and Merciful will make the Prophet Jesus (pbuh) and Hazrat Mahdi (pbuh) His instruments in bringing about the ascendency of the true faith He has chosen for His servants, and will show the world His infinite might. The time we are living in is the beginning of a most blessed and wonderful period. The global dominion of Islam is Allah's promise, and our Lord's promise will definitely be made good.

That is Allah's promise. Allah does not break His promise. But most people do not know it. (Surat ar-Rum, 6)

History is full of examples of friendship between Muslims and the People of the Book

Caliph Umar's declaration to the Orthodox patriarch Sophronios in 638. This declaration guaranteed all of the Christians' rights in the Holy Land.

Anyone looking at the position of Christians and Jews under Islamic rule in history with an unbiased eye will encounter one manifest reality: The People of the Book have always lived in peace and security under Islamic administration. Some even sought shelter in Islamic lands when they were oppressed by other rulers, and found the security they sought in Muslim countries.

It is noted in the Qur’an that compared to members of other communities of believers, Christians will enjoy a particular friendship with Muslims. In this verse God describes how and why Christians are the people closest to Muslims:

... You will find the people most affectionate to those who believe are those who say, “We are Christians.” That is because some of them are priests and monks and because they are not arrogant. (Surat al-Ma’ida, 82)

The first instances of the closeness and warm relations described in the verse came in the time of the Prophet of Islam, the Prophet Muhammad (may God bless him and grant him peace). Some oppressed Muslims were advised by the Prophet Muhammad (may God bless him and grant him peace) to migrate to Abyssinia, which was under the rule of the Christian King Negus, where they lived in peace and security. Excellent relations were established between Muslims and Christians in the early days of Islam, based on the principles of compassion, peace, respect, cooperation, mutual aid and freedom of religion, belief and worship. Aspects of social life such as marriage, trade and neighborliness were also implemented in such a way as to be role models for all Muslims and Christians.

Portents of the Mahdi's Coming

Many of the prophetic hadiths that have been handed down to us in the works of great Islamic scholars are devoted to portents of the Mahdi’s coming. This section examines the links between these hadiths and the present day. We shall see that they describe the contemporary climate and conditions and certain critical events that took place in the recent past accurately and miraculously.

As stated earlier, both the Mahdi’s coming and the fulfillment of the hadiths regarding the portents of Doomsday started coming to pass, one after the other, at the beginning of the 1400s ah (1979-80), clearly reveals that these are the years of the Mahdi’s presence on Earth. (Allah knows the truth, of course.) Let’s now examine these portents.

1)Portents of Mahdis Coming Taking Place One After the Other

Those hadiths that reveal the portents of the Mahdi’s coming describe them as occurring one after the other “like the dots on a prayer-beads.” We can see that this is the case, for as stated in the hadiths, chaos and anarchy are on the rise all over the world, sedition is growing, slaughter and terrible catastrophes are taking place in many lands, poverty and hunger are increasing, and people are suffering terribly. The fact that these portents are coming to pass at one particular time shows that the Mahdi, the blessed person for whom Muslims have awaited for centuries, will come soon. (Allah knows the best!)

Some of the reports related to this subject are as follows:

I asked Abu Abdullah Husain ibn Ali: “Are there portents of this?” – in reference to the Mahdi’s appearance. He said: “Yes.” I asked: “What are they?” He said: “The destruction of the [tribe of the] Bani Abbas, the emergence of the Sufyani (Abu Sufyan), and sinking in Bayda.” I said: “I am afraid this will all take a long time,” to which he replied: “These things will happen one after the other, like the dots on a tasbih (prayer beads).” (Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti, Portents of the Mahdi of the End Times, Kahraman Publishings, p. 3)

Signs of the Doomsday follow one another, like the pieces of a prayer beads falling one after the other when its string is cut. (Tirmidhi Hadiths)

Painful situations and grievous sights will be seen. Strife will go on and on…(al-Suyuti, Portents of the Mahdi, p. 36)

Fitnas (seditions) will follow one another in the near future. Then, there will be other fitnas and even more following them. (Mukhtasar Tazkirah al-Qurtubi, p. 374, no. 684)

2) The Proliferation of Sedition (Fitnas)

The wordfitna (sedition) describes events, environments, and conditions in which all people, especially believers, face intensified tests of their faith. Such tests, in which living conditions are difficult and efforts are made to weaken or destroy people’s faith, are all described as fitna in Islamic sources.

The following hadith describes how believers’ faith will weaken prior to the Mahdi’s coming and the causes thereof:

The Mahdi, one of my children, comes into being, by the blessing of Allah, when the Day of Judgment approaches and the believers’ hearts weaken because of death, hunger, the disappearance of the Sunnah, the emergence of innovations, and the loss of the means by which to enjoin the right and forbid the wrong. His justice and prosperity will ease the believers’ hearts, and friendship and love will settle between the non-Arab and the Arab nations. (Al-Muttaqi al-Hindi, Al-Burhan fi `Alamat al-Mahdi Akhir al-Zaman, p. 66)

To summarize, the following events will take place before the Mahdi appears:

1. Death: Public security will disappear in the face of anarchy, widespread slaughter, and the ensuing tension.
2. Hunger: The high cost of living, as well as catastrophes and natural disasters, will cause a rise in hunger and famine.
3. Fitnas (Sedition): Sin will be encouraged and spread, and all kinds of immoral actions will take place before people’s eyes.
4. Un-Islamic innovations (bid`at): Customs that have no place in true Islam and that were added on and gradually came to be accepted as a true part of it, will emerge.
5. Being Unable to Preach the Religion: An emptiness caused by being unable to teach how good is commanded and evil forbidden; in other words, the preaching of religion.

Sedition enables strong believers to enhance their faith and fortitude, as well as their degree in the Hereafter, whereas they lead those with weak faith to become further removed from faith, and those whose faith is artificial to lose it altogether. The Mahdi will appear at a time when such a climate of corruption is being experienced in its fullest and most violent form.

Another hadith imparts the tidings that there will be confusion, sedition, and fear in the “west”: Disorder, sedition, and fear will emerge in the west... Sedition will proliferate. (Mukhtasar Tazkirah Qurtubi)

Another hadith reveals that the Mahdi will come when sedition is everywhere:

A kind of sedition will surface from which no party will be able to protect itself, and spread immediately in every direction. This situation will persist until one comes and says: “O people, from now on your leader is the Mahdi.”   (Ibn Hajar al-Haytahami, Al-Qawl al-Mukhtasar fi `Alamat al-Mahdi al-Muntazar, p. 23)

In other words, a sedition that opposes religion and Allah will target people’s faith. Today, this sedition is materialist philosophy, the supposed scientific basis of which is Darwin’s theory of evolution. Although it is completely irrational, unscientific, and devoid of any scientific or logical proof, materialist circles are seeking to impose this theory on every society through intensive propaganda, deception, and misrepresentation.

This theory enters our homes through the press and television, whether we live in the West or in the Muslim world. Forming a part of most science and other textbooks, it is imposed upon children from the early grades through constant repetition, such as its most famous claim: that people are descended from a common ancestor with apes. Young people are fed these evolutionist lies from primary school to the university.

In addition, the sedition referred to in the prophetic hadiths can only become so widespread through modern-day technological means (e.g., the press, publishing, the Internet, and satellite communications). Indeed, such widespread sedition has never been seen before today. All of these are important signs that the Mahdi’s coming coincides with our own time. The hadiths also state that this sedition will end when the Mahdi comes.

3) Widespread Slaughter Before the Mahdi Comes

The hadiths reveal that violence and chaos will affect the great majority of people before the Mahdi comes and that much blood will be shed:

Doomsday will not take place until these things come to pass…Death and slaughter will be widespread…  (al-Suyuti, Jamius Sagir, 3:211; Musnad, 2:492, 4:391, 392)

There will be cries of war in Shawwal and war and carnage in Dhu al-Hijjah. Again in Dhu al-Hijjah, pilgrims will be plundered and the roads will be filled with blood…The bloodshed will continue and increase.(al-Suyuti, Portents of the Mahdi of the End Times p. 37) 

…The Hajjis will be looted, and there will be a battle at Mina in which many will be slain. Blood will flow until it runs over the Jamra al-'Aqaba.[Jamra: a stone pillar representing Satan that is stoned during the pilgrimage.] (Narrated by `Amr ibn Shu`ayb, al-Hakim, and Nu`aym ibn Hammad)

There will emerge widespread strife that seems impossible to ever end...(Al-Haythami, Al-Qawl al-Mukhtasar, p. 55)

People make pilgrimage without an imam leading them. Big wars break out when they come down to Mina, and they are entwined just the way dogs entwine, and tribes attack each other. This strife is so widespread that legs are buried in lakes of blood.(al-Suyuti, Portents of the Mahdi of the End Times, p. 35)

Such a strife will appear that nowhere will be spared. When it ends in one place, it will immediately spread to another...(al-Haythami, Al-Qawl al-Mukhtasar,pp. 21-22)

Modern communications technology will make everyone aware of this corruption and disasters. Even though there may only be few people present at the scene, the whole world will learn what is happening instantaneously. Radio, television, newspapers, and the Internet will broadcast bloodshed, injustice, and oppression to the whole world.

4) The Global Pervasiveniss of Chaos and Conflict

At a time when the world will be in utter confusion and disorder (harj), fitna will appear, people will be attacked, the old will not have mercy on the young, and the young will not show respect to the old, Allah will send someone (the Mahdi) to eradicate hostility, conquer the castles of perversion, uphold faith in the End Times just as I upheld it formerly; someone who will fill this Earth with justice where violence prevailed before.   (Al-Muttaqi al-Hindi, Al-Burhan fi `Alamat al-Mahdi, p. 12)

Rather than describing one particular place, the hadith refers to chaos (e.g., conflict, war, slaughter, and terror) spreading all over the world. Indeed, this is the case today, a time when every day hundreds of people are killed or exiled for no fair reason.

5) Strife in Which Even Women and Children Are Slaughtered

Even women, children, the elderly, and the innocent will be massacred before the Mahdi comes:

In this case, killing a woman will be as easy as wielding a whip. This event will spread twenty-four miles from Madinah. Then the oath of allegiance will be taken to the Mahdi. (al-Suyuti, Portents of the Mahdi, p. 34)

The Mahdi will not appear until innocent people are killed… (Ibid., p. 35)

The last of this strife will be the killing of innocent people, and then the Mahdi will appear, to the approval of all. (Ibid., p. 38)

The Mahdi will not appear until innocent people are slaughtered. He will appear when those on Earth and in the skies can no longer bear the killing... (al-Haythami, Al-Qawl al-Mukhtasar, p. 37)

They will kill mothers, fathers, daughters, men, everyone, and inflict great suffering on the [Muslim] community by conquering Persia and Iraq. Among these there will be strife, violence, destruction, and flight. (al-Suyuti, Portents of the Mahdi, p. 36)

6) The Mahdi Will Appear When the Roads Are Cut

The hadiths reveal that the Mahdi will come when the means of transport are severed due to conflict, anarchy, and terror, and when people are unable to travel in safety and security:

When trade and roads are cut and strife multiplies ... (al-Haythami, Al-Qawl al-Mukhtasar, pp. 39-40)

Before the Mahdi appears, trade and roads between nations will be cut and strife among people will grow. (Mukhtasar Tazkirah al-Qurtubi, p. 454)

7) The Increased Oppression of Muslims

During the end times, the hadiths state that Muslim societies will suffer from the conflict, war, and injustice aimed at them. The conflicts and climate of chaos experienced in parts of the Islamic world, both now and in the recent past, as well as the oppression that has led to dictatorial regimes in certain Muslim countries, are some of the proofs that this time has begun.

Everyone bowing (ruqu`) and prostrating (sajda) themselves in prayer will be punished . Cruelty, malice, and vice will be produced; scholars and ascetics murdered; and many cities conquered. There will be hostility to Prophet Muhammad (saas), bloodshed and destruction will be legitimate.

There will be caliphs after me, amirs after the caliphs, and cruel tyrants after the amirs. Finally, one from my line will appear. (Al-Muttaqi al-Hindi, Al-Burhan fi `Alamat al-Mahdi, p. 84)

Woe to this community because of those tyrannical rulers. These cruel ones frighten even the silent and submissive, apart from those who obey them. (Ibid., p. 13)

Every one out of three Muslim will be killed... (Ibid., p. 73)

8) The Destruction of Mosoues

The Sufyani will emerge from a dry valley and form an army from the Kalb tribe consisting of grim-faced and hard-hearted men who will oppress all people. He will destroy mosques and madrassas, and punish everyone bowing (ruqu`) and prostrating (sajda) themselves in prayer.  (al-Suyuti, Portents of the Mahdi, p. 35)

9)Religious Prohibitions Gain Acceptance

Today, although such harmful activities as prostitution, alcohol consumption, usury, and bribery are unlawful or religiously forbidden in many lands, more and more people are indulging in them. Even more, some those who engage in them are praised and encouraged, whereas those who do not are disparaged and belittled. Lifestyles that know no bounds, that care nothing for what the scriptures allow and forbid, and that regard all forms of excess as permissible have spread far and wide during the last few decades. The hadiths describe this dark age, a herald of the Mahdi’s coming, as follows:

Strife will be seen, and more will follow. Such a level of strife will come that the first will spur the last to clashes of swords, and after this there will be such strife that what is forbidden is regarded as lawful. Then the caliphate will come to the Mahdi, the most auspicious individual on Earth, while he is sitting at home. (Al-Muttaqi al-Hindi, Al-Burhan fi `Alamat al-Mahdi, p. 26) 

The Mahdi will not emerge until unbelief invades everywhere and is openly committed in public. What rules in such times is… the invasion by unbelief. That is its power. (Imam Rabbani, Letters of Rabbani, 2:259)

The Mahdi will emerge after the appearance of such vile corruption, whereby all prohibitions are regarded as lawful.  (al-Haythami, Al-Qawl al-Mukhtasar, p. 23)

10) The Open Denial of Allah (Surely Allah is beyond that!)

The Mahdi will not come until Allah is openly and flagrantly denied. 

This hadith indicates that many people will either be atheists or agnostics, and that they will relay their denial to everyone through the press and declare it openly. This state of affairs clearly exists today, since those who deny Allah are highly esteemed for their supposed “modern and contemporary” attitude. Moreover, the public is encouraged to emulate them.

11) The Iran-Iraq War

The hadith reports that a major war will take place in the End Times:

There will be tumult in Shawwal, talk of war in Dhu al-Qa`dah, and the outbreak of war in Dhu al-Hijjah.   (Muhammad ibn `Abd al-Rasul Barzanji, Al-Isha'ah li Ashrat as-Sa`ah, p. 166)

These three months match the dates of the developmental stages of the Iran-Iraq war:

Tumult in Shawwal …

The first uprising against the shah took place on 5 Shawwal 1398 (8 September 1976), as indicated by the hadith.

Talk of war in Dhu al-Qa`dah, and the outbreak of war in Dhu al-Hijjah …

A full-blown war broke out between Iran and Iraq in Dhu al-Hijjah 1400 (October 1980).

Another hadith describes the details of this war as follows:

A tribe will come from the Farsi direction, saying: "You Arabs! You have been too zealous! If you don't give them their due rights, nobody will have an alliance with you... It must be given to them one day and to you the following day, and mutual promises must be kept..." They will be going up Mutekh; Muslims will be coming down to the plain ... Mushrikun [idolaters] will be standing over there on the bank of a black river [Rakabeh] on the other side. There will be a war between them. Allah will deprive both armies of a victory ...   (Ibid., p. 179)

- Those coming from the Farsi direction: Those coming from the Iranian side,
- Farsi: Iran, Iranian,
- Coming down to the plain: Coming down to the Iraqi plain,
- Mutekh: Name of a mountain in the region, and
- Rakabeh: A region where the oil wells are concentrated.

"You Arabs! You have been too zealous! If you don't give them their due rights, nobody will have an alliance with you…"

This hadith may draw attention to the outbreak of a racial dispute that will cause both sides to come down to the (Iraqi) plain and wage war.

Allah will deprive both armies of a victory...

The Iran-Iraq war lasted for 8 syear and, despite the enormous number of casualties, neither side could claim victory.

12) The Occupation of Afghanistan

Pity poor Taliqan [a region in Afghanistan]. At that place are treasures of Allah. These are not of gold and silver, but consist of people who have recognized Allah as they should have. They are the Mahdi’s servants.   (Al-Muttaqi al-Hindi, Al-Burhan fi `Alamat al-Mahdi, p. 59)

Pity poor Taliqan…

The hadith may refer to the invasion of Afghanistan during the Mahdi’s time. Indeed, the Soviets invaded Afghanistan in 1979 (1400 ah – according to the Islamic calendar), the beginning of a new Islamic century. The hadiths state that the Mahdi will appear at the beginning of a new Islamic century. The fact that many portents coincided with this particular date shows that these dates are an important sign of the Mahdi’s coming.

This hadith also draws attention to Afghanistan's material riches. Today, large oil deposits, iron basins, and coal mines that have not yet been commercially exploited have been detected there.

13) The Army That Sank in the Desert

But when this army enters the desert, it will so be buried in the ground at the place called Dhu al-Hulaifah that those on top will not see those underneath, nor will those underneath see those on top, until Doomsday. (al-Haythami, Al-Qawl al-Mukhtasar, p. 21)

One of the portents of his appearance is, as stated before, the burial of an army in the desert.(al-Haythami, Al-Qawl al-Mukhtasar, p. 37) 

< When a shepherd seeing an army moving across the desert on a bright night says: “It will be a sadness for Makkah. Woe will befall them,” he will see the army suddenly disappear. He will say: “Subhan Allah. How did they disappear so quickly?” When he goes down and looks, he will see a blanket half under the ground and half out. He will try to extract it. But when he cannot, he will realize that the army he saw has been buried…(Ibid., p. 39)

Portents And Features Of The Mahdi's Coming

The hadiths of our Prophet (saas) provide very detailed information and signs about the End Times, which will occur shortly before Doomsday. According to these reports, several highly significant events will take place one after the other during this period. In the first stage of the End Times, terrible corruption and chaos will rule; in the second stage, these will be replaced by peace and security as people come to live by true religious moral values.

Our Prophet (saas) imparted glad tidings regarding the Mahdi, who will be sent during the End Times. For example, this great individual will liberate Muslims from cruelty and suffering; eliminate corruption; and usher in an era of peace, justice, plenty, happiness, and well being. According to reliable hadiths, he will return Islam, which has been distorted via superstitions and practices, to its true essence; meet with Prophet ‘Isa (as); and, by Allah’s will, will enable Islam’s moral values to prevail on Earth.

These great tidings enhance all believers’ enthusiasm and excitement. Many of the prophetic hadiths and scholarly manuscripts that have come down to us have transmitted the joy and enthusiasm of those tidings and have kept the subject alive and of interest among believers. The portents that we are seeing in our own time show us that the Mahdi’s coming is close at hand. Indeed, the current climate of chaos, oppression, terror, and war, as well as the strife, famines, and earthquakes, are all portents of this great event.

As we all know, there is a stirring in the Islamic world in the recent days: Military coups are taking place, there is strife and conflict; in brief, persecution against Muslims is spreading significantly. When we look at world media and review the headlines in newspapers, televisions and social media, everyone is searching for the perpetrators. It is an undeniable truth that the Islamic geography is impaired because of the unjust practices based on “Islamophobia”. Yet, do the Islamic countries have no share in the current turmoil?

How will the Islamic world benefit by complaining, bringing excuses, crying out that this is unjust treatment, or protesting and finding others at fault?

When will the Muslims comprehend that they are responsible for all Muslims and need to act in unity?

It is the Responsibility of Every Muslim to Protect Muslims Under Persecution

It is apparent that Muslims are being oppressed and in affliction in Palestine, Indonesia, East Turkestan, Patani, Egypt, Syria or in other parts of the world. Still, there are wars and civil uprisings in the majority of Muslim lands. Hundreds of thousands of unarmed civilians lose their lives in such conflicts, women are raped, tortured and millions of Muslims are deported from their homes and countries, mutilated, and lose their family members. Innocent children are targeted with bullets, babies slaughtered in cradles, and people trying to flee are permanently disabled when they step on mines planted here and there. People are subjected to unprecedented savagery, and tormented severely. Even as in incidents in Egypt, they are martyred ruthlessly while performing prayers. In many countries where Muslims are living, women and children are persistently oppressed and tyrannized. Muslim communities lose their independence one by one, and expect people of conscience to help them but they cannot make their voices heard.

Everyone is aware of these Muslims who are being martyred, because almost everyday it is possible to encounter images of these outcast people in destitute in newspapers and on television broadcasts. Many see the circumstances of these persons and pity them, but later on, when they change the channel or topic of discussion, or flip the pages of a newspaper, they forget the existence of such people. Or a majority of them never consider that they need to make efforts for saving these people from that affliction and Muslims are responsible for one another. By thinking wrongly, “While there are rich and powerful countries and leaders in the world, is it not my duty to save those people”, they push that responsibility onto others. 

Such people may rather prefer standing back by saying, “I have no problems at home, nothing is wrong in my business, and children are fine at school”. However, such a mindset could only prevail in people who are passionately attached to this world, and only run after worldly interests in this transient and fleeting lifespan. Muslims should never forget that this oppression, of which he keeps silent and does not struggle against, could turn into a giant force and harm him drastically one day. He must be aware that not objecting to violence that does not harm him would be a remorseless act, opposite to a believer’s conscience. Particularly, ones who appear to be like “lions” in negligible matters suddenly leave aside all this responsibility to others when confronted with such important incidents instead of making efforts for the good pleasure of God; it would not be proper for a sincere and true believer to leave Muslims alone under persecution and watch these atrocities from the side and act through a mindset which says “Why should we have any concerns for that country, let us care about our own”.

Every Muslim of conscience should find it his responsibility   to strive for saving these Muslims who are suffering under torment. Almighty God is informing us of this obligation for all Muslims:

“What reason could you have for not fighting in the Way of God – for those men, women and children who are oppressed and say, ‘Our Lord, take us out of this city whose inhabitants are wrongdoers! Give us a protector from You! Give us a helper from You!’?” (Surat an-Nisa, 75)

Responsible Muslims Should Criticize Themselves Regarding Problems in the Islamic World

Muslims need to think about these questions sincerely:

·         As the “Islamic world” where did we make the mistake, what should we do from now on?

·         How can we correct past errors? What should be our clear and well-defined steps?

·         What could be the most precise solution that will provide progress in economic, political and social terms?

·         Is there only prejudice against topics that Western communities are not pleased with? Are there aspects that could be found rightful?

·         Does bigotry that is based on certain people’s lack of knowledge or insincerity play a role in this image?

·         Do we possess the understanding of Islam based on love and peace that everyone was pleased with at the time of our Prophet (saas)?

·         Since God informed Muslims to be united in the Qur'an, and revealed that if they do not act this way they would lose their spiritual strength and be oppressed and defeated, would this not make the Muslims liable because they are not in union but disintegration?

Responsibility of Muslims In the Face of Afflictions Should Be to Abide by the Path of God and His Messenger (saas)

The ones who suggest abstinence or temporary solutions based on violence should be aware that as long as they are ignorant to these incidents, the oppression over Muslims grows more because while innocent and helpless Muslims are being mass massacred with no reason, if other Muslims keep silent and only watch the atrocities, that would mean giving support to the wicked ones and persecutors. The ones who are impartial to brutality in order to preserve their own comfort would definitely not be hoping for being together with the ones who have persevered and been patient to this persecution and unlawfulness in the Hereafter.

Some of our Muslim brothers may have different viewpoints regarding the incidents in Islamic countries. A group of them consider retaliating against violence with violence. The ones who would like the public to confront forces of the state with knives or weapons to resolve this affliction should be aware that this mentality does not prevent any persecution. This cruelty will not end with street fights, looting, aggressive attacks or rage. The change that will occur based on violence would never grant the tranquility, peace and security which people long for and are in need of.

And some other Muslim brothers are inclined to think that by means of artificial solutions such as humanitarian aid, truces, humanitarian corridors or refugee camps, this oppression would end. Surely some success or improvement could be achieved with humanitarian aid yet, these would not provide a persistent or substantial solution. Helping others and covering all the needs of the weak and impoverished are the good morals God commands believers to in the Qur'an. However, this is not solely adequate as a solution to people’s problems. Who will distribute this humanitarian aid and how this would be accomplished, whether the interests of the people will be looked after are other dimensions of such efforts.

On the other hand, stability and order must be established in a country for the betterment of living conditions of people. This stability should predominate in all areas from the economy to social life. In that regard, some of the Islamic countries are in great disorder. To sum up, it would be a mistake to expect humanitarian aid to bring solutions, or for such minor help to bring about extensive results since God informed us of only one solution for entire believers and commanded them to be in unity:

Allah loves those who fight in His Way in ranks like well-built walls.(Surat as-Saff, 4)

It should never be forgotten that the only lasting and true solution will be achieved by following the path which God and His Messenger (saas) guide us.

It is very clear that establishing Islamic Union is urgent, so the ones who find this to be impossible or who do not strive for it should not forget that they are to be held responsible for their ignorance. They should not disregard the fact that accepting oppression actually means approving of it. Every Muslim who does not endeavor for Islamic Union is accountable for every drop of bloodshed, every demolished house, the martyred innocents and aggrieved ones living in starvation and poverty in this vast geography. The foundation of the Turkish – Islamic Union is the only solution that God guided us to in the Qur'an and our Prophet (saas) explained this with his hadith in great detail. Unity is an obligation according to the morals of the Qur'an, and division is unlawful.

The Only Solution is Turkish – Islamic Union for Having Peace and Tranquility Established in Muslim Countries

The most important and reasonable effort that Muslims should carry out is to institute “unity”. If the Islamic world wants to free itself from being directed from outside or intervened against in its internal affairs, or would like to gain independence economically from foreign countries or the system which obliges them to listen to the advice of global powers, it should establish unity right away. If a responsible Muslim is thinking that “We do not want to give in to the treacherous plans of dark circles that attempt to put off the rising star of Islam and take away the Qur’an from the hands of Muslims because of their disturbance of Islam’s spreading all over the world ”, then he must surely advocate Islamic Union. Even disbelievers come together in union with opposing ideas or philosophies for wrongdoing, mischief and turmoil and they are quite capable of finding the least mutual grounds for their selfish interests. If the Islamic world does not make an alliance within itself, God informs us that there would be mischief and turmoil in the land:

Those who disbelieve are the friends and protectors of one another. If you do not act in this way (be friends and protectors of one another) there will be turmoil in the land and great corruption. (Surat al-Anfal, 73)

What the Islamic world needs to do is not to allow any conflict between schools or races, and come together in union based on common ground, and to build the “Islamic Union” under the leadership of Turkey right away. This unity will be the means for the beauty of Islam to widespread in the entire region, for the problems to be resolved in itself and to prevent other countries from intervening in the internal affairs of Muslims; and all the conflicts between schools as well as civil wars and turmoil will end. The Turkish – Islamic world should never forget that they can only stand in unity as one body when it is integrated around one center. Just as our Master Bediuzzaman Said Nursi spoke of in The Flashes Collection (21^st Flash), when there is “unity” the entire organs of the body is in comfort and functions like the gears of a factory in harmony and completion. In the good morals of Islam, one hand does not compete with another, one eye does not criticize the other, the tongue does not object to the ear, the heart does not divulge the error of the soul; on the contrary, all these complement and cover their deficiencies to provide for all their needs. In brief: the rights of the entire Islamic geography will be preserved, all discrimination, unjust practices and oppression will end, and an amazing political, social and economic power will arise.

It is not appropriate to be concerned with saving oneself, but far better to seriously strive for every other Muslim. Many Muslims read the stories of the prophets and the lives of the Companions in detail, and appreciate their personalities and superior morality, take examples from their courage, momentum, and undeterred character that withstand all kinds of hardship or difficulties. These blessed persons are notably valuable and selfless individuals who have been given the glad tidings of God’s good pleasure and Paradise. They have always been fearless for goodness and honesty throughout their lives. However, the responsibility of Muslims today is not only talking about their lives, but also taking them as examples and acting like them every moment. The responsibility of every conscientious Muslim is to strive for Islamic Union: This is the only solution that will not only bring peace and serenity to Muslim countries, but also to everyone. As how God creates, our Lord will definitely establish Islamic Union. What is important is to work for this commandment without losing time or self-inflicting more pain.

The coming together of Muslims in unity, and their saying, “In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful”, by seeking refuge in God from the accursed satan, will be a great pleasure as being the start of this obligation that Almighty God commanded. Our Lord reveals that entire Muslims need to be brothers and one community in the verses:

“This nation of yours is one nation and I am your Lord, so worship Me. But they disagreed and split into different sects. Each one will return to Us.” (Surat al-Anbiya, 92-93)

“Hold fast to the rope of God all together, and do not separate. Remember God’s blessing to you when you were enemies and He joined your hearts together so that you became brothers by His blessing. You were on the very brink of a pit of the Fire and He rescued you from it. In this way God makes His Signs clear to you, so that hopefully you will be guided. (Surat Ali İmran, 103)

Alawite, Sunni, Shia, Wahabi, Jafari or Muslims from all other schools should come to the realization that they are one another’s brother in religion; they should heed the cries of Muslims who are tortured and deported from their homeland, killed or mutilated, and comprehend that they have lost a great amount of time and should endeavor right away not to lose more. We should never forget that acting in unity and never separating is an obligation for every one of us as God’s commandment. It is clear that carrying out this commandment of God will be the best practice possible with the good pleasure of God.
